ID Tech Digest – May 8, 2026

May 8, 2026

Welcome to ID Tech’s digest of identity industry news. Here’s what you need to know about the world of digital identity and biometrics today:

Real-Time Deepfake Tools Sold to Scam Compounds

A new investigation has exposed the sale of real-time deepfake tools to “scam compounds” in Southeast Asia. These sophisticated software packages allow fraudsters to swap faces and voices during live video calls, enabling them to impersonate family members, government officials, or romantic interests in real-time. The report highlights a growing underground economy for “fraud-as-a-service,” where criminal groups provide the technical infrastructure necessary for low-level scammers to conduct high-impact social engineering and financial fraud.

Microsoft Expands Passkey Support for Entra and Recovery

Microsoft has announced an expansion of passkey support across its Entra identity platform and consumer account recovery flows. The update allows enterprise users to utilize FIDO2-compliant passkeys for seamless, phishing-resistant logins across all Microsoft 365 services. Critically, Microsoft is also integrating passkeys into its account recovery processes, reducing reliance on vulnerable methods like SMS or email-based resets and moving closer to a completely passwordless ecosystem for both work and personal accounts.

OpenAI Adds Passkeys and YubiKeys for High-Risk Accounts

OpenAI is strengthening the security of its platform by adding support for passkeys and YubiKeys, specifically targeting high-risk accounts and administrative users. This move is designed to protect sensitive AI development environments and user data from credential-stuffing attacks and unauthorized access. By implementing hardware-backed authentication standards, OpenAI aims to ensure that its most critical access points are defended by the highest levels of phishing-resistant security available today.

Mitek Raises Fiscal 2026 Outlook After Record Q2

Mitek has raised its financial outlook for fiscal year 2026 following a record-breaking second quarter. The company reported significant revenue growth driven by increased demand for its mobile deposit and identity verification technologies. Management noted that as financial institutions accelerate their digital transformation and face rising threats from AI-generated fraud, Mitek’s biometric and document authentication solutions are seeing higher adoption rates across the banking and fintech sectors.

First Advantage Reports Strong Digital Identity Demand in Q1

First Advantage has pointed to strong demand for digital identity solutions in its first-quarter financial results. The background screening and identity provider noted that employers are increasingly seeking automated, biometric-backed onboarding processes to vet remote hires and reduce time-to-hire. The results underscore a broader market trend where verified digital credentials are replacing traditional, manual background checks as the primary method for establishing trust in the global workforce.

UK Home Office Opens Procurement for Passports and Services

The UK Home Office has officially opened the procurement process for the next generation of British passport books and related identity services. The multi-billion pound contract covers the design, production, and personalization of physical travel documents, as well as the underlying technology systems required for secure issuance. The tender emphasizes the need for advanced anti-counterfeiting features and the potential for future integration with mobile digital travel credentials.

Leidos and IDEMIA Deploy Biometric eGates for Airport Checkpoints

Leidos and IDEMIA have partnered to deploy new biometric eGates at major airport checkpoints. The automated gates utilize facial recognition technology to verify a traveler’s identity against their flight credentials in seconds, allowing for a “touchless” security experience. The rollout is part of a broader effort by aviation authorities to improve passenger throughput and security accuracy by replacing manual boarding pass and ID inspections with high-speed biometric matching.

FISWG Updates Facial Recognition Guidance and Draft Standards

The Facial Identification Scientific Working Group (FISWG) has released updated guidance and draft standards for the use of facial recognition technology in law enforcement and forensic applications. The updates focus on improving the consistency of image capture and the methodology for manual facial comparisons. These standards are intended to provide a rigorous framework for agencies using biometrics, ensuring that results are scientifically valid and can withstand judicial scrutiny as the technology becomes more prevalent in criminal investigations.
