Welcome to ID Tech’s digest of identity industry news. Here’s what you need to know about the world of digital identity and biometrics today:

Critical Security Flaw Found in UK’s Gov.uk One Login Identity System
A critical vulnerability in the UK government’s Gov.uk One Login platform was uncovered during a red teaming exercise in March, allowing unauthorized access to privileged functions without detection. The flaw adds to mounting concerns over the system’s security and readiness as it scales to support over six million users and more than 50 services. One Login recently lost DIATF certification due to a supplier lapse and continues to fall short on key cybersecurity outcomes and architectural safeguards. Officials say the issue is being addressed, but the discovery underscores persistent governance, compliance, and system design challenges.
Germany Launches First Digital Ministry Under Tech Industry Veteran
Germany has established its first dedicated digital ministry, centralizing responsibilities previously spread across six federal departments. Led by former telecom executive Dr. Karsten Wildberger, the new Federal Ministry for Digital and State Modernization holds authority over national IT infrastructure, digital identity development, cybersecurity, and EU AI Act implementation. It will oversee the rollout of a national digital identity wallet aligned with eIDAS standards and may reform cybersecurity governance structures.
W3C Adopts TruAge Digital ID as Global Age Verification Standard
TruAge, the digital age-verification system developed by NACS, has been incorporated into the W3C’s Verifiable Credentials 2.0 standard, positioning it as the global benchmark for web-based age verification. TruAge uses tokenized, privacy-preserving verification by extracting only essential ID data and issuing encrypted one-time-use tokens. Already integrated with major U.S. point-of-sale systems and mobile ID platforms, the system is being adopted across retail, e-commerce, and entertainment sectors.
OSCE Trains Moldova, Ukraine Border Officers in Vehicle Document Fraud Detection
The OSCE has conducted specialized training for 40 Moldovan and Ukrainian border officers to enhance detection of vehicle document fraud, a key vulnerability in cross-border crime. Held on May 15, the session focused on identifying forged documents and assessing authenticity, in partnership with Beruku Identity. The initiative supports Moldova’s broader border modernization efforts and aims to strengthen regional cooperation amid ongoing security concerns.
Sindh Schools Launch Facial Recognition App to Track Student Attendance
Sindh province has launched a facial recognition-based school monitoring app to track student and teacher attendance in real time. Teachers must capture and upload photos of students during class, which are processed to confirm presence, aiming to prevent attendance fraud and enhance oversight. The system operates only on school premises and feeds data directly to education authorities. This move expands on earlier biometric initiatives for teacher payroll and aligns with broader national efforts to integrate biometric technologies in public services. Sindh is also digitizing academic record verification to combat document fraud and streamline administrative processes.
Maryland MVA Expands Mobile ID Program to All Branch Office Kiosks
Maryland’s MVA has expanded its Mobile ID program by enabling digital ID verification at self check-in kiosks across all branch offices. Residents can now use smartphones with Apple, Google, or Samsung Wallet to verify identity via NFC readers, reducing wait times and enhancing security. The update builds on Maryland’s broader digital ID strategy, including use cases at BWI Airport and a pilot for age verification at alcohol retail stores. The system follows ISO 18013-5 privacy standards and supports national interoperability, though residents are still advised to carry physical IDs for use outside supported contexts.
