Honor Magic8 Pro Leak Highlights Smartphone Industry’s Shift to Advanced Biometric Security

Smartphone makers are ramping up investments in advanced biometric security, reflecting a broader industry push to enhance privacy and meet rising regulatory demands. The latest sign of this shift comes from leaks about Honor’s upcoming Magic8 Pro smartphone, which is expected to feature a large battery alongside cutting-edge biometric technologies.

According to reports from reliable sources, the Honor Magic8 Pro will incorporate a 7,000mAh battery – a significant jump from the 5,850mAh cell used in the previous Magic 7 Pro model. Beyond power capacity, however, the device underscores an important technological transition underway across the mobile industry: the shift toward more sophisticated biometric authentication systems embedded directly beneath smartphone displays.

Expanding on Honor’s previous work with ultrasonic sensors, the Magic8 Pro is rumored to adopt a 3D ultrasonic under-screen fingerprint scanner. Unlike earlier optical sensors, ultrasonic technology reads the physical contours of a fingerprint using sound waves, offering greater resistance to spoofing and higher reliability through screen protectors or moisture. Industry analysts note that these sensors now support larger scanning areas, enabling advanced use cases such as two-finger authentication for secure banking or crypto-wallet applications.

In addition to fingerprint recognition, Honor is reportedly planning to integrate a structured-light facial recognition system housed in a pill-shaped punch-hole cutout, reminiscent of designs seen on recent iPhones. This multi-modal approach reflects a broader trend toward combining biometric modalities – fingerprint plus facial data – to enhance security while maintaining convenience for users.

Honor’s developments align with a wave of changes sweeping the smartphone market. Since 2024, major Android manufacturers, including Xiaomi, OnePlus, and Google’s Pixel series, have increasingly shifted away from traditional optical fingerprint readers in favor of ultrasonic technology. This transition has been accelerated by the entry of additional suppliers like Goodix, whose mass-market ultrasonic solutions have driven down costs and expanded availability beyond premium flagship devices.

Regulatory factors are also propelling this evolution. The European Union’s updated Strong Customer Authentication rules, combined with growing adoption of FIDO passkeys and banking-grade digital identity systems, are nudging manufacturers toward more robust hardware-level security. According to market research forecasts, the global ultrasonic fingerprint sensor market is projected to grow at a compound annual rate exceeding 24 percent through 2030, highlighting investor confidence in the sector’s future.

While the Honor Magic8 Pro is expected to feature other high-end specifications, including a Snapdragon 8 Elite 2 chipset, a 200MP main camera sensor with periscope zoom, and a flat 6.71-inch display, the real story is how it serves as an example of the industry’s biometric transformation. As smartphone users demand both convenience and stronger privacy protections, biometric technology is becoming a central pillar in the design of next-generation devices.
