HID’s U.ARE.U Camera Identification System now has sophisticated software from Amazon running under the hood. Amazon Rekognition is supporting face detection and facial recognition functionality on the device.
First launched in 2016, Amazon Rekognition has grown from a general-purpose computer vision tool to a more versatile platform. Initially, it focused on tasks like object detection and facial analysis. Over time, Rekognition has expanded its capabilities to include more sophisticated functions like emotion detection.
The latter won’t be necessary in HID’s flagship camera system, which is primarily intended for identity assurance. Instead, Rekognition is being leveraged to match face images together, and to detect various face attributes, such as whether a given subject is wearing eyeglasses or has their mouth open or closed in a given image.
The software will complement the sophisticated sensor technology that underlies HID’s U.ARE.U system. HID’s tech is able to scan faces across a wide range of lighting conditions, including extreme brightness or darkness, and features a built-in liveness detection system, enabling it to guard against presentation attacks.
In announcing the integration, HID suggested it would enhance U.ARE.U’s utility across a wide range of application areas, including healthcare, hospitality, retail, financial services, sports, transportation, and the government sector.
“We are proud to work with Amazon’s face recognition technology to meet the best possible performance in challenging environments, such as self-serve and point of sale,” said Vito Fabbrizio, the Biometrics Business Unit Managing Director for HID’s Extended Access Technologies arm. “The goal is to enable the best possible customer experience without compromising on accuracy and security.”
HID’s U.ARE.U solution was recently integrated into a self-boarding e-gate system for airports, and into a patient check-in solution for the healthcare sector thanks to a partnership with kiosk manufacturer CTS.
