HID Global Makes NOMAD Biometric Readers Compatible with iOS Devices

HID Global’s HID NOMAD 30 Pocket Reader is now compatible with iOS devices. The company is hoping that the update will make the solution more appealing to law enforcement agencies that are searching for a cost-effective suspect identification solution for use in the field.

The NOMAD is a PIV-certified fingerprint sensor that can be synced with an officer’s personal mobile device. After that, the officer can use the NOMAD to capture a suspect’s fingerprint and match it against a watch list without returning to the station. The NOMAD is currently being used in a capital city in Europe, while another city was able to identify six times as many subjects and save $600,000 in its first year with the single-print mobile scanners, HID says. 

At launch, the NOMAD could only be paired with Android devices. The iOS update will improve interoperability and make it easier for police departments to take advantage of the solution.

“The expansion of our offering broadens the application of our mobile biometric solutions and equips our customers to achieve rapid identification anywhere,” said HID Global VP and Citizen Identity Managing Director Jessica Westerouen van Meeteren. “Ensuring that our portfolio is optimized to create safer societies is key to our mission as a leader in trusted identities.”

In other news, HID Global also announced several performance upgrades for its HID SEEK Avenger device. The rugged biometric handheld can be used for fingerprint and iris recognition, with offline functionality to facilitate matches in remote or adverse environments. Thanks to the latest updates, the device now offers support for Windows 10, and comes with double the amount of memory and hard drive in addition to a better camera.

The Avenger is designed primarily for military bases. HID Global recently provided credentialing technology for a metal mine in Mexico, and has leveraged its Bluetooth Aware fobs to help enforce social distancing policies during the COVID-19 pandemic.
