HID Global Fingerprint Solution Gets Perfect Score in iBeta’s PAD Testing

HID Global‘s Lumidigm system has become the first fingerprint scanning technology to attain a perfect score in Level 1 of ISO/IEC 30107-3 Presentation Attack Detection testing. That means the Lumidigm V-300 sensor was able to resist 100 percent of the spoofing attacks carried out by testers at iBeta Quality Assurance, an independent lab accredited to carry out such testing by the National Institute of Standards and Technology.

In a statement announcing the achievement, ISO/IEC 30107-3 Editor and Novetta Special Projects VP Michael Thieme explained that “[l]iveness detection is a critical component of a trusted fingerprint biometric security architecture that also includes capture and template-matching capabilities,” adding, “Organizations deploying biometric systems should consider independently-validated PAD solutions to help ensure the biometric products they deploy defend against these types of attacks.”

Indeed, presentation attack detection is of increasing concern to security experts as biometric technology continues to proliferate and advance. In addition to the NIST, the FIDO Alliance – an industry consortium more focused on the consumer sector – has also recently launched a new certification program for biometric authentication technology that includes a strong PAD component. And iBeta, the lab that tested HID Global’s Lumidigm technology, recently became the first lab in the world accredited to evaluate solution’s against FIDO’s standard.

While HID Global’s technology was assessed against the ISO/IEC guideline, its perfect score suggests it will have no problem getting certified through FIDO’s program as well, should HID Global go ahead with such additional testing. For now, it already has considerable credibility, thanks to its success with respect to the ISO/IEC 30107-3 PAD standard.
