HID Debuts Facial Recognition and Passwordless Authentication at Sydney Security Conference

HID showcased its latest biometric facial recognition and passwordless authentication technologies at the Security Exhibition & Conference 2025 in Sydney, introducing new solutions for secure, user-friendly access in enterprise and government environments. The presentation highlighted the HID Amico facial recognition reader, the OMNIKEY SE Plug portable reader, and new FIDO-certified credentials powered by the company’s Enterprise Passkey Management (EPM) platform.

The HID Amico reader employs advanced facial recognition algorithms to deliver fast, secure access without requiring passwords or PINs. Designed for high-security applications such as healthcare facilities, government offices, data centers, and corporate workplaces, the Amico integrates with existing identity management systems and supports compliance with strict security requirements.

Central to the launch were HID’s new FIDO-enabled credentials and subscription-based EPM platform, which allows organizations to manage passkeys across multiple devices and applications. EPM centralizes administrative control while keeping private keys on the user’s device, helping reduce operational complexity for large enterprises and supporting hybrid and remote workforce needs.

Privacy and Security by Design

HID says the Amico reader is designed with privacy and security controls, including an optional Template-on-Card mode that stores biometric templates on the user’s credential rather than in a centralized database. Combined with FIDO passkeys managed via EPM, this ensures authentication data remains device-bound and protected against unauthorized access.

“HID technology enables people to seamlessly and securely move between physical and digital places. We are proud to present the latest product innovations that will future-proof workplace security at this year’s Security ASIAL conference,” said Steve Katanas, Head of ANZ, Physical Access Control Solutions at HID.

Industry Context and Integration

The OMNIKEY SE Plug offers cable-free, USB-C connectivity, supporting mobile devices, tablets, and laptops to enable secure authentication from virtually anywhere. This flexibility makes it particularly valuable for organizations with distributed teams or mobile operations.

The Sydney launch follows several significant developments in the biometric authentication sector, including OneSpan’s acquisition of FIDO pioneer Nok Nok Labs in June 2025 and Keeper Security’s introduction of biometric passkey login for its password vault platform in August 2025. HID’s latest products are designed to integrate seamlessly with mobile and desktop environments, helping organizations strengthen authentication while improving the user experience.
