Barcelona-based facial recognition software firm Herta has announced the upcoming release of Herta v4, a platform upgrade scheduled for next month that restructures its communications architecture, tightens security requirements, and reorganizes the product into a more modular structure.
The most technically substantial change in v4 is the adoption of a three-protocol communications model. REST becomes the standard for all external integrations, providing developers and technology partners with a uniform interface for connecting third-party systems. gRPC handles internal service-to-service communication; its binary framing and lower overhead suit high-volume, multi-service environments where the verbosity of REST adds latency. MQTT remains in place for edge deployments and real-time data flows, where its lightweight publish-subscribe model fits constrained hardware and low-latency requirements. The combination allows each communication layer to use the protocol best matched to its function rather than routing all traffic through a single interface.
Security receives attention on two fronts. Herta v4 enforces HTTPS-only communications across the entire platform, eliminating cleartext credential exposure in mixed-protocol deployments. The release also introduces updated authentication mechanisms that the company describes as aligned with current enterprise requirements for session management and protection of connected services.
The platform REST API is being rebuilt on API-first and RESTful principles. Herta says the redesigned API aims to reduce integration complexity for developers and shorten deployment timelines for customers and technology partners connecting the platform into broader security or access control infrastructure.
Structurally, v4 separates the Demographics capability from the core platform and moves it into a standalone application. Herta’s existing BioMarketing product, which performs facial analysis for audience measurement and retail analytics, is the module being extracted. The company says the separation improves maintainability and allows the analytics product to evolve on its own release cycle, independent of the core security and access control stack.
Herta, headquartered in Barcelona, develops facial recognition software for security and access control deployments across banking, government, transportation, retail, casinos, and sports and events venues. Its product line includes BioSurveillance NEXT for high-volume crowded-environment monitoring, BioAccess for access control, BioFinder for forensic video analysis, and BioObserver for behavioral analytics. The company has been expanding its deployment footprint in transportation, including a contract to supply facial recognition for Indian Railways, and has drawn recognition for biometric stadium security deployments in Europe and Latin America.
