Gunnebo Entrance Control has completed a large-scale biometric security deployment at China’s Chongqing Jiangbei International Airport, installing more than 150 intelligent boarding gates equipped with facial recognition and behavioral analytics. The rollout at Terminal 3 is part of a broader smart renovation initiative and is among the most extensive implementations of AI-driven boarding gate technology in Asia to date.
Advanced AI Integration to Enhance Security and Flow
At the heart of the deployment is Gunnebo’s BoardSec system, which integrates facial recognition technology with visual behavior analysis. Using camera arrays and deep-learning algorithms, the system is capable of identifying more than 20 potentially risky behaviors, including tailgating, reversing, and the presence of unattended luggage. When suspicious activity is detected, the system automatically alerts airport security personnel for immediate intervention.
The system is designed not only to strengthen airport security but also to optimize passenger flow. In 2024, Chongqing Jiangbei International Airport served over 40 million travelers, making it one of China’s busiest air hubs. By automating identity verification and behavior monitoring, the BoardSec system allows for faster, more secure boarding while minimizing congestion at control points.
Part of a Global Shift Toward Smart, Contactless Travel
The implementation aligns with a broader global trend toward biometric screening and contactless passenger processing, a shift accelerated by the COVID-19 pandemic. Similar solutions have been deployed at other major international airports, including a comprehensive biometric screening program at Madrid-Barajas Airport, which improved throughput and security using facial recognition and automated gates.
Gunnebo has maintained a strong presence in the airport security market since at least 2018, when it began deploying biometric-enabled boarding gates in airports such as Munich and Hamburg. The Chongqing project represents the company’s latest and largest installation in the Asia-Pacific region, and further consolidates its position as a global leader in AI-based access control systems for aviation.
The new boarding gates are part of a smart infrastructure upgrade at Chongqing Jiangbei International Airport, reflecting a wider push across China’s civil aviation sector to adopt AI-powered, contactless solutions.
