Gunma Bank Adds Cardless Face-Authenticated Transactions at Seven Bank ATMs

Gunma Bank customers can now deposit and withdraw cash at Seven Bank ATMs across Japan without a cash card, using face authentication instead. The regional bank has launched Gungin FACE CASH, built on FACE CASH, Seven Bank’s face-authentication transaction service.

After registering their face in advance, customers can make deposits and withdrawals and check balances at Seven Bank ATMs nationwide, as well as at the Famima ATMs being rolled out in FamilyMart stores. At the ATM, customers are verified using face authentication, a dedicated face-authentication passcode and their cash card PIN. Transfers, loan transactions, PIN changes and changes to withdrawal limits are not available through the service.

The service is open to individual customers who hold an IC cash card for an ordinary deposit account and use the bank’s Gungin app; only the account designated as the representative account in the app can be registered. Customers apply through the app, and the bank checks the application and the result of an identity check, which requires the e-NINSHO identity verification app. After receiving a completion email, customers have 14 days to register their face at a Seven Bank ATM.

Gunma Bank said it aims to offer customers a new banking experience while reducing the risk of fraudulent use. To mark the launch, it is running a campaign until April 30, 2027: the first 1,500 customers in each of two periods, or 3,000 in total, who register their face and make at least 5,000 yen in combined deposits and withdrawals at Seven Bank ATMs will receive 1,000 yen.

FACE CASH is part of Seven Bank’s +Connect range of services that handle procedures and authentication at its ATMs. In February, Orix Bank became the first online bank to adopt it, for card loan transactions, giving its customers card-free access across Seven Bank’s network of about 28,000 ATMs, including when a loan card’s magnetic stripe cannot be read.

The service combines face authentication, the face-authentication passcode and the PIN in a multi-layered check. Going without a card also means customers do not need to have one reissued when it is lost, stolen or damaged.
