GMO Adds Passkey Sign-In to Onamae.com Domain Accounts

GMO Internet has added passkey sign-in to Onamae.com, its Japanese domain-registration service, allowing account holders to access domain-management controls without entering a password. Members can register a passkey from the account management screen at no charge.

Once enrolled, a user can approve a login with the biometric unlock, PIN or screen-lock function on a compatible phone or computer. The supported environments include Windows, macOS, iOS 16 or later and Android 9 or later, with Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari among the listed browsers. A fingerprint or face scan is an option where the device provides it; the new login does not require every account holder to use biometrics.

The service uses passkeys in place of a memorized password. The device retains the authentication information used to complete sign-in, so a user does not type a reusable secret into a website. That reduces exposure to conventional password theft and fake login pages, although account security still depends on protecting the device and its recovery methods.

Domain accounts carry unusual privileges. A person who gains access may be able to change website and email settings, redirect visitors or set up convincing phishing pages under a legitimate domain. GMO said those risks prompted it to add the passwordless option to the registrar’s member login. The new feature concerns access to the management account, not the process for proving ownership of a domain name or registering a new domain.

Other online services have also moved passkeys into ordinary customer sign-in. German webmail providers GMX and Web.de enabled passkey login for their users this summer, while Tesla added passkey setup to its mobile account app this month. A registrar account is a different target because it can control the web and mail destinations used by other people.

Onamae.com members can begin registration from their existing management screen and then use a supported device to unlock the credential when signing in. GMO says Onamae.com has registered more than 42 million domains over its history and handles approximately 630 types of top-level domain. The passkey option is available to member accounts now, without an additional service fee.
