GLEIF Launches Global vLEI Hackathon to Spur Digital Trust Innovation

The Global Legal Entity Identifier Foundation (GLEIF) has launched a global innovation challenge aimed at accelerating adoption of its verifiable Legal Entity Identifier (vLEI) framework. Announced this week, the vLEI Hackathon invites developers, entrepreneurs, and digital trust stakeholders to design new applications that strengthen organizational identity verification and support global digital trust infrastructure.

Hackathon Builds on vLEI Deployment and Global Partnerships

The hackathon builds on GLEIF’s recent strategic initiatives, including the Global Partner Program launched in May and the deployment phase of its vLEI framework. While full production rollouts are expected later in 2025, the hackathon aims to catalyze real-world use cases ahead of implementation. Participants will create solutions across three key thematic areas: digital assets and financial infrastructure, industry and commercial processes, and trade and supply chain resilience.

The vLEI is a secure, cryptographically verifiable digital credential that links an organization’s Legal Entity Identifier to specific roles within that entity. Based on the ISO 17442 standard, it enables direct peer-to-peer verification without reliance on third-party intermediaries, offering a scalable approach to establishing trust in business interactions.

Winners to Present at Major Industry Events

Teams will submit their projects through the APIX Platform, where they will be reviewed by an international panel of experts. Finalists will showcase their solutions at several high-profile events, including Chainlink SmartCon in New York (November 3), Hong Kong Fintech Week (November 7), and GLEIF’s own ORG ID Forum in Frankfurt (December 2).

According to GLEIF, the initiative aims to “catalyze innovation and promote cross-industry collaboration to develop novel applications for the verifiable Legal Entity Identifier (vLEI).” The organization sees the vLEI framework as foundational for the future of the digital economy, helping businesses “trust and be trusted globally.”

This latest effort follows GLEIF’s recent collaboration with Qichacha, a Chinese platform that will help expand the global visibility of business entity identifiers across jurisdictions.
