Ghana has launched the “CitizenApp”, a digital platform designed to enhance public service delivery and streamline government interactions. Officially announced this week by Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the app is meant to offer citizens a comprehensive, mobile-friendly interface to access a wide range of public services, consolidating various government services into a single platform.
“This app will put power directly into the hands of the people by cutting through bureaucracy, reducing waiting times, and making government services available from the convenience of a mobile device,” Bawumia said.
A key feature of the CitizenApp is its integration with the Ghana Card, the country’s biometric national identification system. The integration allows users to verify their identity through biometric authentication, such as fingerprint or facial recognition. The app’s biometric single sign-on (SSO) functionality is meant to not only ensure secure access to services but also enable seamless data sharing between government agencies. This data interoperability is expected to eliminate redundant processes, allowing various departments to access a unified digital record for each citizen.
Beyond immediate benefits for citizens, the CitizenApp is anticipated to drive economic growth and improve business conditions. By reducing administrative burdens, the platform aims to create a business-friendly environment, enhancing Ghana’s competitiveness in the global economy. Dr. Bawumia noted that the digitization efforts would “create an environment where businesses can thrive, and the public can access the services they need without unnecessary delays.”
The app is set to expand, with plans to integrate more services over time. Meanwhile, public awareness campaigns are being rolled out to ensure that citizens are well-informed about the app’s features and are equipped to make full use of this technology.
