Germany Signs EUDI Wallet MOU with Bitkom

Germany is formalizing industry support for the planned rollout of the European Digital Identity Wallet through a new memorandum of understanding between the Federal Ministry for Digital Affairs and Transport and the digital industry association Bitkom. More than 75 companies and organizations have joined the agreement, which is intended to speed deployment and encourage broad adoption of the European Digital Identity Wallet in Germany.

Bitkom describes the EUDI Wallet as a way for citizens to keep official documents such as identity cards and driving licences securely on a smartphone. By signing the memorandum, participating organizations commit to updating their processes so that the wallet can be used in real-world interactions for identification, age checks, and the presentation of digital credentials across public services and private sector use cases.

Signatories span sectors including banking, transport, telecommunications, technology, and identity services. Companies highlighted in the announcement include Deutsche Bank, Deutsche Bahn, Lufthansa Group, Mastercard, N26, SAP, Vodafone, Bundesdruckerei, and IDnow. Bitkom positions the joint commitment as groundwork to ensure that, once available under the eIDAS 2 framework, the wallet can be used widely in day-to-day scenarios rather than remaining a niche pilot.

Germany’s national EUDI Wallet initiative is overseen by the Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport and delivered by an interdisciplinary team coordinated by the Federal Agency for Disruptive Innovation. The project aims to provide a wallet that is interoperable across the EU and that supports secure storage and presentation of digital identity credentials both offline and online. The memorandum was signed in connection with a summit on European digital sovereignty held in Berlin.
