GBT Technologies Files Patent for Mask and Body Recognition System

GBT Technologies has filed a nonprovisional US patent application that describes an enhanced face and body authentication methodology. The concept was developed in response to COVID-19, with GBT noting that the widespread adoption of masks limited the effectiveness of the face-based unlocking systems commonly found in mobile phones.

The new patent attempts to solve that problem with technology that can identify someone with a covered face. To that end, the system will be trained with an uncovered face, and retain its ability to recognize the features of that face once a mask is added later.

The system would have similar utility when applied to the human body. People would be able to scan their physical attributes, and GBT’s solution would be able to use that as a baseline to track the body changes that stem from weight gain and other factors.

That body tracking feature could ultimately prove to be the more noteworthy part of the patent, since multiple facial recognition providers have already updated their commercially available facial recognition algorithms to identify people wearing masks. In that regard, GBT is trailing well behind the competition. The company acknowledged that it would still need to raise significant capital and secure manufacturing and distribution partners in order to research, develop, and sell its proposed solution, even if it does manage to secure the patent.
