Identity solutions provider GBG has launched a new global Digital ID solution, a module for its “GBG Go” platform, designed to solve the growing problem of ecosystem fragmentation. The new solution functions as an orchestration layer, or aggregator, allowing businesses to accept and verify a wide variety of Digital IDs from around the world through a single, secure connection.
This platform is a direct response to a major new business opportunity: the staggering complexity of the digital ID market. In the past few years, the ecosystem has fractured into dozens of proprietary and non-interoperable wallets. Apple and Google are building identity into their mobile operating systems; national governments are issuing their own eIDs; and financial institutions are launching their own BankIDs.
For a global business, this fragmentation creates a significant integration and compliance nightmare. GBG’s “GBG Go” platform effectively positions itself as the “Plaid for Identity.” It offers to handle all the backend fragmentation, allowing a business to connect to a single API and get aggregated access to a growing list of trusted Digital ID networks, including government-issued eIDs, mobile driver’s licences (mDLs), and BankIDs.
This “aggregator” position, which sells simplicity to businesses facing complexity, is a high-margin and highly defensible role in the new identity ecosystem.
The solution is also designed to help businesses prepare for new regulations, most notably the EU’s eIDAS 2.0. This regulation will mandate that private companies in sectors like banking and travel must accept the new government-issued European Digital Identity (EUDI) Wallet. By integrating with an aggregator like GBG Go, a business can ostensibly achieve compliance with eIDAS 2.0 and future-proof its operations against the next wave of digital wallets, all without having to build and maintain dozens of individual connections themselves.
