Garmin and Meta have announced a partnership to integrate Garmin’s fitness tracking ecosystem with the new Oakley Meta Vanguard smart glasses, giving athletes real-time training data through augmented reality displays. The collaboration links Garmin watches and bike computers with the Vanguard glasses, allowing users to see heart rate, pace, speed, and elevation metrics directly in their field of vision while exercising.
Real-Time Metrics and Training Features
The Oakley Meta Vanguard glasses provide an AR interface that responds to voice queries through Meta AI, so users can request updates such as pace or heart rate without looking at a watch or phone. The glasses also feature a peripheral status LED that flashes glanceable cues when a target metric is reached, and they automatically capture short video highlights during workouts at key milestones such as distance, speed, or elevation changes. Data can be synced with Strava, enabling athletes to overlay performance stats on media and share their sessions.
While the glasses handle visualization and media capture, users need compatible Garmin devices to access the full range of biometric metrics. Historical training data is also stored, allowing athletes to track progress and adjust their training programs over time.
Design and Athletic Use
The Vanguard glasses are built for high-intensity performance, with a wraparound lens and Oakley’s PRIZM optics to enhance clarity and contrast. They feature IP67 water and dust resistance, making them suitable for outdoor training, and include three replaceable nose pads for customized fit. The glasses are helmet compatible and designed for stability during demanding workouts. Battery life is listed at up to nine hours, with a charging case that provides additional power for extended use.
By combining Garmin’s established fitness technology with Meta’s AI and Oakley’s performance design, the Vanguard represents one of the first major integrations of AR eyewear with mainstream athletic tracking. The partnership aims to give athletes more immediate access to performance feedback without disrupting their training flow.
