Fime has announced major updates to its Digital Identity Application and Reader Test Suites, expanding support for European Digital Identity (EUDI) Wallets and ISO-compliant mobile Driver’s Licenses (mDLs). The upgrades are designed to streamline compliance testing for organizations deploying digital identity solutions that must meet rigorous international standards, including ISO/IEC 18013-5 and 18013-7.

The updates come as the European Union pushes toward the mandatory deployment of EUDI Wallets by May 2026 under the eIDAS 2.0 regulation. The legislation requires all EU member states to offer at least one digital identity wallet and compels private sector services in high-impact sectors such as finance, healthcare, and transport to accept them. Fime’s upgraded tools are intended to ease this transition, ensuring that stakeholders can test their systems for both technical and regulatory compliance.

“Momentum behind digital identity initiatives is greater than ever,” said Steve Pannifer, Senior Vice President of Digital Identity at Fime. “We have combined our expertise in each of these fields, with our unrivaled track record in payments, to support the creation of an accessible, inclusive, and trusted digital identity ecosystem for all.”

The test suites offer a wide range of technical features, including functional and personalization conformity testing for both mDL applications and readers, as well as server retrieval conformity testing for remote reader implementations. The tools support a variety of communication protocols, including NFC, BLE, Wi-Fi Aware, and QR code-based exchanges. Compatibility with both Android and iOS platforms ensures developers and public agencies can validate solutions across the most widely used mobile operating systems.

Interoperability remains a central challenge in the rollout of digital identity infrastructure across the EU. With different member states developing varying national architectures, Fime’s testing tools are designed to help governments, wallet developers, and identity issuers meet common standards and support cross-border verification. This is particularly relevant as the European Council has also directed member states to introduce a uniform digital driver’s license across the bloc by 2030, reinforcing the need for long-term interoperability and standardization.

Security and privacy are also key pillars of Fime’s offering. The updated test suites help validate systems for secure data transmission, encrypted credential storage, and privacy-preserving user consent mechanisms—critical components for compliance with both eIDAS and GDPR requirements.

These developments come amid a surge of activity across Europe’s digital identity landscape. Major technology firms have joined national EUDI wallet initiatives, and member states like Belgium are fast-tracking digital identity card deployments. With these enhancements, Fime is positioning itself as a key enabler in the EU’s effort to build a cohesive, secure, and inclusive digital identity ecosystem.
