Facial Recognition Leads to Three Arrests in London as UK Surveillance Expands

June 23, 2025

The Metropolitan Police arrested three individuals in Ealing, West London last week, following a live facial recognition (LFR) deployment, underscoring the growing use of biometric surveillance technology by UK law enforcement.

Facial Recognition Deployment Leads to Arrests

Officers used a mobile LFR van to scan faces in real time against a database of individuals wanted in connection with ongoing investigations. According to a local report, the Ealing operation directly led to the arrest of three suspects. While the police have not provided further details about the individuals apprehended, they confirmed the arrests were facilitated by facial recognition alerts. The force maintains that such deployments are conducted under strict policy guidelines that emphasize necessity, proportionality, and transparency.

This latest operation comes as the use of facial recognition by police continues to expand rapidly across the UK. In 2024 alone, forces in England and Wales scanned approximately 4.7 million faces – more than double the number from the year before. The Metropolitan Police reported over 500 arrests linked to LFR alerts during that period. Meanwhile, the Home Office has committed £55 million over four years to expand the technology, including funding for ten new LFR vans.

Public Debate and Ethical Oversight

The Ealing arrests occur against the backdrop of a broader national conversation about biometric surveillance. A May 2025 report from the Ada Lovelace Institute warned that the UK lacks a comprehensive legal framework to regulate police use of facial recognition, describing the current environment as a “legal grey area.”

Public opinion remains divided. A recent survey in Scotland found 49 percent of respondents in favor of police facial recognition use, while 48 percent opposed it. Despite concerns about accuracy, racial bias, and civil liberties, the UK government continues to support the technology. In August 2024, the Home Office appointed six new members to its Biometrics and Forensics Ethics Group, which advises on the responsible use of biometric systems, including LFR.

The Metropolitan Police plan to pilot the UK’s first fixed LFR cameras later this year in Croydon, further expanding facial recognition beyond mobile van deployments. Separately, a national “strategic facial matcher” hub is in development to coordinate real-time image comparisons across forces, signaling a future where facial recognition could become embedded in routine policing operations across the country.
