One of China’s largest cities has begun using facial recognition technology to bust bogus marriages and shorten the process of registering newly married couples, reports South China Morning Post.
The Marriage and Adoption Registration Management Centre in Chongqing hopes to prevent the occurrences of people registering under a false name by introducing a process where newlyweds will have to place their ID cards on a machine which will compare their faces with information collected and stored in a police database. The technology will be used with locals and marriages between Chinese and foreigners.
Think you can fool the system with a facelift? The report on the new technology says it would be able to “cope” with people who’ve had plastic surgery.
If effective, plans are to introduce more marriage registration centres around the municipality in southwest China.
China is a major adopter of facial recognition technology and it was reported last year the government wanted to build a database that would be able to identify any one of its 1.3 billion citizens within seconds.
