FaceTec has published its 2024 “Liveness Detection Security Report”, detailing a number of achievements going back to the start of last year.
The company tripled its Spoof Bounty Program to $600,000 and is now performing over 2.6 billion 3D Liveness Checks annually, with no reported fraud. It also passed the NIST-accredited Bixelab PAD testing in June of 2023, achieving a 0 percent False Acceptance Rate (FAR), and has maintained iBeta Level 1 & 2 PAD certifications for over four years.
iBeta’s Presentation Attack Detection certifications are industry-standard tests for biometric security systems, particularly facial recognition. They evaluate a system’s ability to detect “presentation attacks” such as attempts to spoof or bypass facial recognition using photos, videos, or masks.
Level 1 tests involve basic attacks like printed images or videos, while Level 2 introduces more sophisticated attacks like 3D masks. FaceTec’s successful completion of both levels demonstrates its robustness in detecting and preventing these common attack vectors, ensuring higher security in unsupervised authentication scenarios.
The Report also details the company’s completion of a 14-day video injection penetration test. The test was conducted by a European biometrics lab, which attempted nearly 1,000 video injection attacks using the latest video injection and hooking techniques. Despite these efforts, the lab was unable to bypass FaceTec’s liveness detection.
Meanwhile, FaceTec’s own Spoof Bounty Program has rebuffed over 150,000 attacks, further proving the system’s robustness. The Program has evolved significantly since its inception in October 2019, when it launched with an initial $30,000 bounty. It has since seen several increases in its potential payout, reflecting the company’s commitment to enhancing its biometric security.
In 2020, the bounty was raised to $100,000, followed by a doubling to $200,000 in spring 2022. When FaceTec tripled the total potential payout to $600,000 at the start of 2023, it also extended the program’s coverage to include iOS and Android operating systems alongside the existing web browser program.
FaceTec recently announced the launch of its new “UR Code” solution, which encodes registered biometric and identity data into a scannable QR code. The system enables anyone with a smartphone to immediately match QR code data to a person’s face, offering a virtually irrefutable link between the person and the identity data held by the issuing authority.
FaceTec SVP Jay Meier discussed the new system in a recent interview from Identity Week America in Washington, D.C.
