Evolv Technology Marks Face Scanning Security Milestone

Boston-based Evolv Technology is celebrating an important milestone with the news that its AI-driven computer vision technology has scanned more than a million people.

The company’s platform, Evolv Edge, is designed to scan video feeds for security threats based on a combination of object and facial recognition. Evolv says it conducted trials of its platform at 30 locations last year, and that its distributors are now using Evolv Edge in 14 countries across the US, Europe, Asia, and the Middle East.

In a statement announcing the new milestone, Evolv Technology CEO Mike Ellenbogen stressed Evolv Edge’s security applications, asserting, “We need to implement modern technology solutions that allow us to take a proactive approach to prevent the evolving threats facing today’s society, rather than reacting after the fact.”

It’s an attitude shared by many interests in the law enforcement and border security sectors, but it’s also one that could run up against growing concerns about privacy and civil rights as government authorities’ use of biometric surveillance technology escalates. For its part, Evolv is also targeting the private sector, noting in its announcement that its technology has been deployed by the The Raymond F. Kravis Center for the Performing Arts in Palm Beach, for example.
