EU Entry/Exit System Rollout Prompts Queue Warnings at French Border Crossings

European border and travel authorities are again warning passengers to expect longer queues as the European Union’s biometric Entry/Exit System (EES) continues to roll out across Schengen external border checkpoints, including UK–France juxtaposed controls at Dover, Folkestone and London St Pancras.

According to French government guidance, EES began phased introduction on October 12, 2025, with full implementation expected by April 10, 2026. The French Interior Ministry says the process will increasingly rely on pre-registration devices such as kiosks and tablets intended to capture traveller data before the staffed booth check. While the pre-registration devices are described as optional and free to use, the EES process introduces biometric enrolment requirements for eligible non-EU travellers, including the capture of fingerprints and a facial image at first registration.

Fresh reporting in January 2026 has focused less on the policy timeline and more on operational throughput, with warnings that biometric registration could materially slow processing at high-volume crossing points. VisaHQ, citing France’s border police (PAF), reports that “nearly 200 kiosks” have been installed and that a first-time EES enrolment can take “up to two minutes” per traveller, compared with roughly one minute for manual passport stamping. The report frames this as a likely driver of longer waits, especially during peak travel periods when first-time registrations are concentrated.

Additional coverage has highlighted the risk of disruption at UK–France crossing points as enrolment volumes increase. The Local reports that EES processing targets were raised to 35 percent starting January 9, 2026, up from 10 percent previously, with the stated objective of reaching 100 percent by April 10, 2026. The report also quotes a Eurostar spokesperson as saying EES checks at London St Pancras were being completed manually by border officers at the time of reporting, with kiosk-based processing expected only once operational software and an activation timetable are confirmed and approved by France’s Interior Ministry.
