South Korea’s Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) has been chosen to lead the development of an international standard for digital identity wallets, marking a significant milestone in global efforts to improve interoperability in digital identification systems.
International Standardization Effort
The initiative will be carried out under the oversight of the International Telecommunication Union Telecommunication Standardization Sector (ITU-T) Study Group 17, which is responsible for standards related to identity management and security frameworks. ETRI’s work will involve collaboration with international experts, government agencies, and industry stakeholders to establish guidelines for secure digital containers that store and manage personal identification information, credentials, and digital certificates.
According to ETRI’s announcement, the project will focus on ensuring interoperability across different digital identity wallet systems, enabling adoption in various sectors including finance, public services, and industry. Development is expected to take several years, with standardization work proceeding in alignment with ITU-T’s multi-year program.
Growing Adoption of Digital Credentials
The effort comes amid increasing momentum for digital identity solutions worldwide. In the United States, Louisiana’s LA Wallet digital ID is now accepted at airport security checkpoints, federal buildings, and courthouses across the country. Such developments highlight the growing role of mobile and digital credentials in identity verification for travel, online services, and secure facility access.
Standardization work by bodies such as ITU-T is intended to ensure these solutions are secure, privacy-protective, and interoperable across jurisdictions. The new digital identity wallet standard will address areas such as authentication protocols, data protection measures, and technical frameworks for compatibility between systems.
