DXYZ, a Migalo Holdings group company, will offer a beta version of its FreeiD Pay face payment service on Sumitomo Mitsui Card’s stera market app marketplace from November 20, allowing merchants that use the card company’s stera terminal standard to accept face payments without installing new equipment.
Merchants add the FreeiD Pay app to their existing terminal from stera market. The stera terminal standard is an all-in-one, Android-based device that handles credit cards, debit cards, electronic money and QR codes, and can download business apps from the marketplace.
At checkout, staff open the FreeiD Pay app on the terminal and enter the amount, and the customer looks at the terminal’s camera to authenticate and complete the payment. A push notification from the FreeiD app and an email confirm the transaction. Merchants can also set the app to require a PIN depending on the amount.
Migalo Holdings said labor shortages in retail and food service are pushing stores to reduce staffing and streamline checkout. DXYZ has tested FreeiD Pay at events and commercial facilities, including a 2025 trial at Aeon Mall Tokoname selected under Aichi Prefecture’s Aichi Digital Island Project, where 346 people used it for about 3.5 million yen in six days. While studying a commercial launch including point-of-sale integration, the company decided that connecting with a terminal already installed at merchants nationwide would bring face payment to more stores.
DXYZ plans to improve the service during the beta and work toward a full release, while gradually introducing FreeiD Pay at physical stores that use the terminal. It is also considering linking with the FreeiD app so users can search for participating stores, receive coupons and campaign information and earn rewards based on visits. Another idea is offering benefits limited to residents and employees of buildings that use FreeiD.
FreeiD is a face authentication ID platform that merges keys, wallets and identity documents into a single face registration used for entry, payment and identity confirmation. Its apartment product covers entrances, elevators and unit doors, which the company describes as Japan’s first apartments run entirely on face authentication, and the platform was in 480 completed buildings at the end of October 2026.
