Dutch Banks and Insurers Develop MyCheck Digital Identity Wallet

A coalition of Dutch banks, insurers and technology organizations is developing MyCheck, a digital identity wallet intended to let people identify themselves, prove their age and share verified information through a single app.

ABN AMRO, Achmea, ASN Bank, Deloitte, KPN and Rabobank are the initiative’s founders and investors. The group has offered to work with the Dutch government on introducing the independent wallet without charging the government or users.

The developers describe MyCheck as an app for digital interactions, documents and personal information. Proposed uses include logging into services, signing contracts, demonstrating that a person meets an age requirement and sharing address information when applying for a driver’s license or passport.

Users would be able to see which information an organization requests and decide whether to share it. For an age-restricted service, the intended process would establish that a person is old enough without disclosing their name, address or full date of birth.

The wallet is also intended to let people share verified information directly when completing an application or contract, reducing repeated form filling. Digital agreements could be reviewed and signed within the same app, while access to participating services would use the wallet rather than separate accounts and passwords.

ABN AMRO says the project is being developed in the context of eIDAS 2.0, the European digital identity framework, and government-supported testing of compatible wallets. The coalition describes its proposed service as a Dutch alternative to comparable offerings from large international technology companies.

The Netherlands already has an established bank-backed identity ecosystem. itsme launched in the Dutch market as the successor to iDIN, allowing adults to establish an identity in the app and authenticate to services. The transition from iDIN to itsme is scheduled to finish by the end of 2027.

MyCheck brings together a different group of participating organizations around a wallet for public- and private-sector interactions. Its founders include financial institutions, an insurer, a consultancy and a telecommunications provider, combining their technology and service experience in the development effort.

A.S.R. and Nationale-Nederlanden have indicated that they intend to use MyCheck’s capabilities. The founding coalition is also discussing participation with other organizations as it develops the wallet’s identity-sharing, login and digital-signature functions.
