A new drone called the ROAM-e is aimed at being the next selfie stick. The device tethers with a user’s phone and is designed to take selfies from the air.
Developed by Australia-based IoT Group, ROAM-e is equipped with facial recognition technology allowing it to track its user from up to about 82 feet, and it has a 360-degree camera. It also offers a video feed that can be streamed for up to 20 minutes at a time, and its dual rotors are collapsible so that it can be neatly folded and stored away.
The device could pour fuel on the selfie craze’s fire, but it could also add to the growing privacy concerns around drones and the public use of facial recognition technology in general. Moreover, depending on its connectivity, it could also provoke questions regarding Internet of Things security, since it’s possible that its camera could be vulnerable to hack attacks.
This is just speculation, of course, as the device isn’t yet commercially available and its full specifications have not been revealed. IoT Group has suggested ROAM-e will have a price tag of about $265, and will begin taking preorders in June.
