Dormakaba Takes Minority Stake in RealSense for AI-Powered Access Control

November 20, 2025

Global access-control vendor dormakaba has acquired a minority stake in RealSense Inc., a U.S. startup specializing in AI-powered computer vision for access control. The deal serves as both a venture investment and a strategic partnership to co-develop next-generation intelligent access solutions across sectors such as critical infrastructure, commercial real estate, and data centers.

RealSense focuses on using computer vision and AI models for real-time identity recognition and anomaly detection at entry points. The company’s origins trace back to the chip giant Intel, which made the strategic decision to spin off the RealSense computer vision division into a standalone entity to better capture the market for secure authentication. According to the dormakaba media release, RealSense technology will be integrated into dormakaba’s portfolio to enhance frictionless, biometric-based access while maintaining strong privacy controls.

Dormakaba plans to leverage RealSense’s speed in AI innovation to complement its own global channel network. The companies will initially focus on high-security sectors where the convergence of physical and logical security is a priority. This aligns with dormakaba’s ongoing efforts to modernize entry experiences, such as the initiative where Budapest Airport piloted FaceBoarding tech developed in part by dormakaba. The push toward seamless flow was also a key topic when dormakaba’s Mark Borto discussed touchless passage and the post-pandemic demand for frictionless security at airports.

For RealSense, the investment follows earlier successes in applying its facial authentication technology to different verticals. For example, RealSense and TabletKiosk partnered for facial biometrics in school cafeterias, demonstrating the flexibility of the platform for secure, high-throughput environments.

For CISOs, this investment suggests that biometric and computer-vision-based access control will increasingly be bundled with analytics and policy engines. Organizations evaluating access-control refreshes may soon see AI-native, camera-based identity verification presented as a default option rather than an add-on, offering richer signals for zero-trust and insider-threat programs.
