Digital Identity Groups SIA and ADIA Partner to Advance Global ID Standards

The Secure Identity Alliance (SIA) and the Accountable Digital Identity Association (ADIA) have announced a strategic partnership aimed at accelerating the development of trusted, privacy-focused digital identity systems worldwide. The initiative will bring ADIA’s membership under the umbrella of SIA, with SIA assuming exclusive licensing rights to ADIA’s Digital ID Trust Framework Specification.

The partnership reflects growing global momentum around digital identity standards. Notably, Thailand’s Finema became Southeast Asia’s first Qualified vLEI Identity Issuer earlier this year, while jurisdictions like the EU and China push forward with digital identity pilots and decentralized models such as blockchain-based RealDID.

SIA and ADIA aim to address the increasing demand for secure and interoperable frameworks by publishing best practices, supporting regulatory compliance, and advocating for privacy-by-design principles. The organizations plan to focus on practical implementation strategies that preserve national governance while enabling cross-border operability, helping governments and businesses deploy digital identity systems that meet user expectations and international standards.

This collaboration arrives amid a surge in national digital identity initiatives, including Spain’s proposed mandatory social media ID policy and Canada’s digital ID consultation. However, public attitudes toward digital ID remain mixed. Surveys suggest concerns about privacy, surveillance, and data centralization persist, particularly where digital wallets are government-controlled.

By combining SIA’s technical leadership in eID and credential management with ADIA’s policy-oriented approach to digital trust and accountability, the partnership is well-positioned to shape global conversations around identity security. Future focus areas may include decentralized identity architectures, AI-based verification, and the mitigation of exclusion risks for populations without access to smart devices or secure connectivity.
