DERMALOG Wins LivDet-Iris 2025 With Top Performance Against Contact Lens Fraud

DERMALOG Identification Systems GmbH has secured a notable achievement in biometric security, winning the LivDet-Iris 2025 competition with top performance across multiple test categories. The Hamburg-based company’s iris recognition algorithm stood out in detecting sophisticated presentation attacks, particularly advanced textured contact lenses designed to mislead biometric systems.

LivDet-Iris 2025 Results

The LivDet-Iris competition, organized by academic institutions and industry partners, is recognized as a primary benchmark for assessing iris liveness detection. The 2025 edition introduced new challenges that reflect real-world threats, including morphing attacks and increasingly realistic textured contact lenses. DERMALOG’s algorithm achieved an Area Under the Receiver Operating Characteristic (AUROC) of 0.9999 in the textured contact lens task—equivalent to 99.99 percent under this metric. While not identical to a raw “accuracy” rate, this score indicates near-perfect discrimination between genuine irises and fraudulent attempts in that test.

In the algorithms portion of the competition, DERMALOG placed first in all three tasks: morphing detection, general presentation attack detection, and textured contact lens detection. In the systems track, where full devices are evaluated, DERMALOG was the only participant. These results extend the company’s track record in liveness detection, following previous success in fingerprint liveness competitions.

Broader Impact of the Win

Presentation attacks—attempts to impersonate someone’s biometric identity with tools such as contact lenses or manipulated images—pose a growing challenge as biometric authentication spreads into everyday applications. Accurate detection is vital for border control, financial services, and law enforcement, where a single failure can have serious consequences. The effectiveness of DERMALOG’s iris recognition system against contact lens fraud demonstrates how biometric technology is adapting to evolving threats.

Industry observers note that adoption of secure biometric authentication is expanding worldwide. Countries are increasingly implementing systems for national security and public services, such as Thailand’s recent use of iris and face biometrics to register migrant workers for healthcare access. Independent market forecasts suggest continued strong growth in consumer and enterprise biometric deployments, driven by demand for identity verification and fraud prevention.

DERMALOG has also been recognized with numerous innovation awards in Germany and abroad. The company previously won a major fingerprint liveness detection competition and has been ranked among innovative firms in Germany. Its latest success at LivDet-Iris underscores its continuing role in developing biometric technologies that respond to increasingly sophisticated fraud attempts.
