Dermalog Jenetric Licenses BDI Tech to Develop Full-Screen Fingerprint Scanners for Consumer Devices

Dermalog Jenetric, the German biometric technology firm known for its advanced fingerprint scanners, has licensed Bidirectional Display’s (BDI) image sensor panel technology to support the development of full-screen fingerprint sensing for consumer electronics. The agreement allows Jenetric to integrate fingerprint recognition across the entire display of a device, eliminating the need for dedicated sensor zones.

Expanding Fingerprint Biometrics to the Full Display

BDI’s Image Sensor Panel (ISP) technology is designed to enable large-area optical fingerprint sensing, including thin-film and fingerprint-on-display applications. With this licensing deal, Dermalog Jenetric can now explore fingerprint authentication solutions that span an entire touchscreen, an approach that could reshape the user experience for smartphones, tablets, and other personal electronics.

“We are thrilled that Dermalog Jenetric has decided to take a license of our technology, and we continue to welcome partners who want to innovate with us,” said Hsuanyeh Chang, President of BDI.

The partnership reflects a growing industry trend toward expanding biometric authentication capabilities across more of a device’s surface. As major smartphone manufacturers investigate similar innovations, the potential for full-screen fingerprint recognition to become a standard feature is increasing. This kind of seamless, integrated authentication could offer improved ergonomics and broader design flexibility without compromising security.

Dermalog Jenetric’s Role in Global Biometric Innovation

Jenetric, acquired by German biometrics leader Dermalog in 2023, brings extensive experience in optical fingerprint scanning to the collaboration. The company is known for its use of thin-film transistor (TFT) technology to develop compact, high-resolution fingerprint scanners for secure identity verification. Its solutions have been deployed in government and security applications across more than 100 countries.

The full-screen capability builds on Jenetric’s core technology and marks an evolution from traditional contact-based biometric systems toward integrated, device-wide authentication platforms. As mobile manufacturers look to differentiate their products and improve security without adding hardware bulk, fingerprint-on-display solutions are expected to gain traction.

The integration of BDI’s ISP technology into Jenetric’s product development could accelerate the arrival of this next-generation biometric technology in consumer markets. The companies anticipate that these advancements will offer not only a more convenient user experience but also expanded design options for device makers aiming to deliver both aesthetics and security.
