Delhi Police plan to deploy AI-enabled smart glasses with facial recognition during Republic Day 2026 security operations in New Delhi, alongside expanded CCTV monitoring, drone surveillance, and a large-scale police presence, Times Now reported, citing PTI.
According to the report, the glasses will connect to real-time databases containing records of known criminals, proclaimed offenders, and suspects. A senior police officer told PTI the wearable system can scan faces in crowds and match them to a central database within seconds, alerting the wearer when a match is found.
The planned deployment is part of a multi-layered security operation covering Kartavya Path and other Republic Day venues. Times Now reported that the overall plan includes more than 10,000 police officers, extensive CCTV coverage, and facial recognition supported by AI-driven analytics.
Facial recognition has been an active area of law enforcement adoption in India, including earlier deployments where Delhi police expanded AI facial recognition for suspect identification. Wearable form factors have also drawn interest beyond public safety, with reports of consumer smart glasses exploring facial recognition raising privacy questions.
Times Now said the glasses would complement fixed cameras by giving officers a mobile interface to the same databases used for real-time watchlist matching in crowded environments.
The report did not provide technical specifications for the glasses or the underlying facial recognition system beyond the database connection and alerting workflow, and it did not specify whether the system would be used beyond Republic Day.
