Cyphlens says it has closed an oversubscribed $3.8 million seed round as it tries to establish "visual encryption" as a new enterprise control: protecting sensitive information at the moment it is viewed, rather than only at rest or in transit. The company’s announcement lists Salesforce Ventures, Motivate Ventures, DCG, ex/ante, and Cambrian Ventures as participants, and describes visual encryption as a category aimed at the "last mile" where traditional encryption no longer applies.
In practical terms, Cyphlens claims its technology transforms sensitive on-screen data into encrypted visual ciphers that are readable only through a secure decoding lens, reducing exposure even when data must be displayed. The company also emphasizes deployability, with its CEO Rocky Motwani arguing that visual encryption can be added to existing systems in minutes, positioning the approach as an overlay rather than a rip-and-replace platform.
The concept sits adjacent to identity and access management rather than competing with it. If the underlying claims hold in real deployments, a "view-time" control could serve as a compensating layer for workflows that remain hard to lock down with IAM alone, including call centers, high-privilege operational dashboards, shared-screen environments, and regulated processes that still require humans to view sensitive records. Cyphlens explicitly ties its threat model to AI-driven data exposure, phishing, insider risk, and supply-chain environments.
Alongside the funding, Cyphlens announced an expanded advisory board that includes Chris Novak, founder of Verizon’s Threat Research Advisory Center, and William MacMillan, described as a former CIA chief information security officer, as well as leaders from Cigna and XTRM. Novak also contributed a quote endorsing the company’s architecture as anticipating future threats while simplifying enterprise protection.
