CypherFace Launches Encrypted Facial Biometric Payment Verification Platform

U.S.-based fintech startup CypherFace has launched an encrypted facial biometric system designed for secure payment verification in high-transaction environments. The platform, which began operations in early 2024, aims to strengthen fraud prevention while supporting efficient, seamless transactions for businesses and consumers.

Encrypted Biometrics and Real-Time Verification

CypherFace’s system processes encrypted facial scans and applies AI-driven liveness detection to verify users in real time during digital payments. The technology is designed to reduce the risk of spoofing attempts, such as deepfakes or synthetic images, by ensuring that only physically present individuals can authorize a transaction. The company says its approach prioritizes privacy by encrypting biometric data end-to-end and enabling verification without storing raw facial images.

Integration is handled through an API that connects to existing payment infrastructure, allowing merchants to implement the solution without significant system changes. By authenticating users before a transaction is completed, CypherFace’s technology aims to stop fraud proactively rather than reactively. “Authentication must occur before a transaction,” said Syed Samir Hassan, founder of CypherFace. “We designed CypherFace to meet that requirement efficiently and reliably.”

Industry Context and Rising Fraud Concerns

The launch comes at a time when payment fraud remains a growing challenge. According to the Nilson Report, global card-payment fraud losses totaled USD 33.83 billion in 2023. Juniper Research has separately estimated that e-commerce merchants lost more than USD 48 billion to online payment fraud in the same year. Synthetic identity fraud has also been rising sharply, with Experian reporting a 60 percent year-over-year increase in false-identity cases in the UK, and TransUnion finding exposure up 38 percent in U.S. auto lending during the first half of 2023. Research from the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston estimates synthetic identity fraud losses exceeded USD 35 billion in 2023, underscoring the scale of the problem.

The broader financial sector is adopting biometric authentication to address these risks. In August 2025, Federal Bank launched India’s first biometric authentication system for e-commerce card payments, allowing customers to verify online purchases with fingerprint or face ID. Earlier in the year, Checkout.com introduced its own face authentication feature as part of its identity verification platform. These moves reflect a growing recognition that stronger identity verification is needed to counter evolving fraud threats.

CypherFace positions its platform as a solution that balances strong security with user convenience. By streamlining verification and reducing manual reviews, the company claims its system can lower operational costs for businesses while improving fraud defenses. As digital payment volumes continue to grow worldwide, demand for secure yet frictionless verification tools is expected to remain high.
