Costa Rica Opens First Biometric eGates at Juan Santamaría Airport

Costa Rica’s Juan Santamaría International Airport has placed its first four biometric eGates into operation, automating immigration checks for eligible Costa Rican passengers arriving in the country.

The gates began processing travelers in the arrivals area on September 8. Airport operator AERIS said the deployment represents an investment of about $3 million and is intended to improve border security while reducing the time passengers spend at immigration control.

An eGate reads a traveler’s electronic passport, checks the document’s data and compares the holder with the credential using facial biometrics. The automated process allows eligible passengers to complete the identity check without being directed to a staffed booth for the routine portion of inspection.

The first phase is limited to adult Costa Rican nationals with a valid biometric passport who meet the migration authority’s eligibility requirements. AERIS described the project as a joint effort with the Costa Rican government to modernize migration control at the country’s principal international airport.

AERIS estimates that each gate can process about 180 passengers an hour, adding capacity for 720 arrivals and increasing the airport’s migration-processing capacity by about 64 percent. A typical automated check takes 17 to 22 seconds, with migration officers available when additional review is required.

Juan Santamaría Airport serves the capital region from Alajuela and is Costa Rica’s busiest aviation gateway. Introducing automated border gates there brings the country into a growing group of states using electronic travel documents and face matching to manage passenger flows.

Airports have increasingly adopted biometric processing at both immigration and security checkpoints. Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport recently extended facial recognition screening to U.S. citizens, while European airports are preparing for wider use of automated identity checks under regional border systems.

Biometrics are also moving beyond passenger processing into airport operations. Frankfurt Airport, for example, has planned facial recognition for staff access to secure areas, illustrating how the technology is being used for both border control and workforce credentials.

The Costa Rican installation initially consists of four gates in arrivals. Its immediate operational role is to give eligible nationals a self-service route through migration control while allowing officers to focus on travelers who require manual processing.
