Cognitec Delivers 250 FaceVACS-Entry Cameras for Australia’s Biometric Border Automation

Cognitec Systems is in the process of delivering 250 of its “FaceVACS-Entry” biometric camera systems to the Australian Department of Home Affairs, fulfilling a major border automation contract. The devices are being deployed at major international airports across Australia to be used at primary control points for facial image capture, quality checks, and traveler identity verification.

The contract is for a full-service solution, including the biometric hardware, integration software, mounting rigs, physical installation, and ongoing support and maintenance services.

The FaceVACS-Entry device is an advanced capture unit. It is designed to automatically detect a traveler’s height and “automatically adjusts the camera position to capture a frontal pose photo.” This automation is critical for ensuring the high-quality, ICAO-compliant images necessary for accurate 1:1 biometric verification against travel documents, especially in a high-throughput environment.

This deployment is a critical, infrastructural component of Australia’s long-term border digitization and automation strategy. With approximately 41 million international travelers passing through Australia annually, manual processing is no longer viable. This contract provides the physical hardware needed to automate the “capture” portion of the biometric entry-exit process.

The “smart” capabilities of the FaceVACS-Entry are the key technological enabler, as they de-skill the capture process, increase traveler throughput, and, most importantly, reduce the rate of poor-quality image captures that lead to false rejections and manual interventions.

This is a clear example of a government moving from biometric policy to biometric procurement, purchasing the hundreds of physical devices required to make a fully automated, contactless border a reality.

The Australian deployment reflects global trends in biometric border automation, where governments are investing heavily in infrastructure to process growing numbers of travelers efficiently. The contract also demonstrates Cognitec’s continued expansion in the Asia-Pacific region, where it competes with other major biometric vendors for large-scale government contracts.
