Co-founder Returns as Pangiam Embarks On Airport Security Project

Pangiam is welcoming the return of one of its co-founders as the company’s AI-driven security business picks up steam.

Dave Reissfelder helped to establish the company together with Patrick Flanagan in 2019, when he was also serving as the Chief Executive Officer of Freedom Innovations, a developer of prosthetic feet and knee solutions. He served in the latter role from September of 2017 to June of last year; now, he is officially joining Pangiam as Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer.

Flanagan, meanwhile, serves as Pangiam’s COO, while the company’s Chief Executive Officer is Kevin McAleenan, who expressed excitement about Reissfelder’s return.

“As a co-founder and a proven executive, we know that Dave’s expertise, particularly in creating operational efficiencies, will be an asset to the rest of the Pangiam team as we continue to grow,” he said.

Pangiam’s announcement of Reissfelder’s appointment highlighted his performance as CEO of Freedom Innovations, noting that under his leadership the firm “achieved historic sales and profitability, resulting in a successful exit in December 2020.” The announcement also highlighted Reissfelder’s experience in the aviation sector via his role as Chief Financial Officer at Reveal Imaging Technologies, a threat detection specialist for which he was employed from late 2003 to early 2011.

That company’s focus certainly overlaps with that of Pangiam, which revealed last month that its technology would be used in an airport security project in partnership with Google Cloud. Dubbed “Project DARTMOUTH”, the project will use AI and Machine Learning-driven computer vision technologies to identify potential security threats in travel baggage, both through X-ray scans and in the analysis of behavioral anomalies.

The AI technologies will be trialed in the security facilities of AGS Airport Ltd., the owner and operator of the United Kingdom’s Aberdeen, Glasgow, and Southampton Airports. While the project’s initial focus will be on baggage screening, its organizers say that later phases will see the the AI technologies applied to other areas of interest in airport security.

“Pangiam’s mission of trusted movement globally has never been more critical than in today’s environment,” commented Reissfelder. “I am thrilled to return to Pangiam and partner with the exceptional management team to deliver on that vision.”

The appointment and Pangiam’s announcement of Project DARTMOUTH come after Pangiam’s acquisitions of facial recognition specialist Trueface and of the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority’s veriScan passenger processing system last year.
