Cloudflare has opened reservations for human-readable wallet handles and outlined a forthcoming wallet service designed to give people and AI agents stable identities for online transactions.
Users can claim handles now through cloudflare.pay. The company says funding and using the wallets will follow in a later release, making the current launch an identity-claiming step rather than a fully available payment product.
The planned system has two layers. An Account Wallet will belong to a person through a Cloudflare account, while Virtual Wallets can be created for AI agents and accessed with API keys. Each virtual wallet can be assigned an allowance, merchant allowlist and maximum transaction size. A person can also require review or override an agent’s transaction.
Cloudflare plans to support stablecoin payments and the x402 internet-payment protocol. That could let agents buy access to application programming interfaces, content and Model Context Protocol tools without receiving direct control of the owner’s main payment credentials.
The identity component connects a virtual wallet to the Cloudflare account that created it. An agent can optionally present a readable handle when interacting with a merchant, allowing the merchant to recognize the agent and trace its authority back to an accountable human or organization. Cloudflare says merchants will decide when that level of identification is required.
The approach adds a transaction layer to the rapidly developing market for AI-agent identity and access controls. Security vendors have focused largely on authorizing agents inside enterprise systems. Cloudflare is instead linking delegated identity to the ability to make purchases on the open web.
Cloudflare will also connect wallet handles with Web Bot Auth, its cryptographic system for identifying automated traffic. A keypair that would otherwise appear as a machine-readable identifier can be associated with a readable name. That gives websites a clearer basis for deciding whether to trust, limit or charge an automated client.
The launch arrives as standards groups work through similar questions about delegation and accountability. A recent NIST concept paper on AI-agent identity examined how an agent should prove which user or organization authorized it and what actions it is permitted to take.
Cloudflare says the wallets will integrate with its Monetization Gateway, allowing website operators to set payment rules for automated access. The timing for wallet funding and transaction support has not been specified.
