Starting in August 2025, CLEAR will partner with the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) to introduce a biometric eGates pilot program at three major U.S. airports: Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL), Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA), and Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA). The initiative is designed to modernize airport security and improve the passenger screening process ahead of large-scale international events.
Biometric Verification at Security Checkpoints
The pilot will use biometric eGates to verify a traveler’s identity by matching a live facial image to both their government-issued ID and their boarding pass. Once verification is complete, passengers can bypass the traditional TSA podium and proceed directly to the physical security screening area. CLEAR emphasizes that the eGates will operate under the full control of TSA, which maintains responsibility for all vetting and access decisions.
During the pilot, access to the eGates will be limited to Clear Plus members, who will benefit from expedited checkpoint processing. According to CLEAR, the program will be deployed at no additional cost to taxpayers, with the company funding the technology and infrastructure. TSA will continue to oversee the security process and ensure compliance with federal standards.
Strategic Timing and Broader Industry Context
The launch comes less than a year before the United States hosts the 2026 FIFA World Cup, when more than 20 million international visitors are expected to travel through U.S. airports. CLEAR has framed the pilot as a step toward preparing the country’s aviation infrastructure for the surge in global traffic. “We are proud to help make America’s airports great ahead of the World Cup,” said CLEAR CEO Caryn Seidman Becker. “The U.S. should be leading on security, hospitality, and the travel experience. This partnership with TSA is a powerful example of how public and private sectors can work together to enhance security and improve the aviation ecosystem.”
The program aligns with broader trends across the aviation industry. Major airlines are increasingly adopting biometric solutions to streamline passenger identification, with American Airlines recently expanding its TSA PreCheck Touchless ID capabilities at select airports. TSA has also been pursuing touchless identity verification at additional locations, reflecting a coordinated effort to integrate new technologies into airport operations.
The CLEAR–TSA partnership arrives at a time when U.S. airlines are pressing for expanded use of facial recognition technology at security checkpoints, even as lawmakers raise concerns about privacy and oversight. Insights from the pilot at ATL, DCA, and SEA will inform the potential nationwide rollout of biometric eGates, which could reshape the passenger experience and set new standards for airport security procedures across the country.
