Checkout.com and Adyen have started offering Visa Payment Passkey to merchants, letting cardholders confirm online card payments with the fingerprint, face scan or other method they use to unlock their device instead of a one-time passcode.
Checkout.com said it is live with the feature and is rolling it out in phases, starting with selected merchants across the UK and Europe. The passkey runs on the authentication infrastructure Checkout.com merchants already use, so eligible merchants can offer it without building a new checkout flow. If passkey authentication is unavailable, the transaction continues with existing verification methods. The company said the option works for first-time and returning customers and is particularly relevant for businesses with frequent repeat purchases, including retailers, marketplaces, food delivery platforms and digital services.
“Every one-time passcode is a point where a customer can walk away,” said Rami Josef, senior product director at Checkout.com. “Visa Payment Passkey lets returning shoppers authenticate the way they already unlock their phone, making checkout both safer and simpler.”
Adyen is adding the passkey to Authenticate, a module within its Adyen Uplift payment optimization suite. It will initially offer the integration in the UK, with further enhancements and a global expansion planned for 2027. Once a cardholder’s bank verifies their identity and the cardholder creates a passkey, the device unlock method can authenticate future eligible transactions. Authenticate uses machine learning to decide whether a transaction needs authentication, which method to use and what information to share with the card issuer.
“By integrating Visa Payment Passkey into Authenticate, we are giving our merchants a seamless way to protect their customers against fraud while making online checkout faster and more intuitive using familiar device biometrics,” said Rahul Hampole, senior vice president of product for payments at Adyen.
Checkout.com is also supporting Visa’s Trusted Agent Protocol, which helps merchants distinguish trusted AI shopping agents from bots and malicious traffic
“By bringing Visa Payment Passkey to Checkout.com’s merchants, we’re making it easier for businesses to reduce friction at checkout and for consumers to authenticate securely,” said Mathieu Altwegg, head of product and solutions at Visa. “That will become even more important as AI agents play a greater role in how people shop and pay.”
