OpenAI is rolling out an age prediction model in ChatGPT to determine whether an account should receive an under-18 experience, with a path to verify age if the system makes an incorrect call.
OpenAI said the model uses a combination of behavioral and account-level signals, including account age, typical times of activity, usage patterns over time, and a user’s stated age, to estimate whether a user is under 18.
Users who believe they have been misclassified can verify their age through Persona, using a live selfie or a government-issued ID.
OpenAI said it expects the rollout to reach the European Union within weeks, as age assurance becomes a more common requirement for online platforms and digital services. Recent moves include facial age estimation rollouts, government planning for age-verification schemes, and proposals for EU-wide age checks.
OpenAI described the approach as a way to limit friction for most users while still providing a backstop for cases where a more explicit age check is needed.
In a description of the model, OpenAI said it examines “a combination of behavioral and account-level signals, including how long an account has existed, typical times of day when someone is active, usage patterns over time, and a user’s stated age.”
