Cameroon Launches Advanced Biometric National ID System with 48-Hour Issuance Promise

Cameroon has launched a new biometric and digital national identity card system through a partnership between the General Delegation for National Security (DGSN) and German company Augentic. The modernized system enhances the country’s identity management infrastructure with more advanced security features and digital capabilities.

The new ID cards contain an electronic chip storing all recorded data, a Machine Readable Zone (MRZ), and a unique QR code. The biometric component captures ten fingerprints for reliable identity verification. Cameroon has become the first African nation to adopt the ID-1 portrait format, meeting International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standards.

The system rollout began with online pre-enrollment through idcam.cm on February 17, followed by biometric data collection at identification posts in regional capitals starting today. The government promises 48-hour ID card processing with a fee of 10,000 FCFA.

To support the initiative, Cameroon is expanding its identity infrastructure with three new ID card production centers in Yaounde, Douala, and Garoua. The country will increase its registration centers from 280 to 548, installing modern enrollment facilities with at least 15 biometric capture desks in all regional capitals.

The new IDs offer secure access to e-government services and electronic document signing through digital certificates. This development reflects a broader movement toward digital identity modernization across Africa.
