Buenos Aires Airport Deployment Marks Beginning of Bigger Biometric Screening Program in Argentina

Argentina’s Buenos Aires Ezeiza International Airport is now using biometric passenger processing thanks to Vision-Box technology.

The automated eGates are currently being used to process individuals in possession of an Argentinian passport who are 18 years of age of older and re-entering the country. The eGates use facial and fingerprint scans to match Argentinian adults to biometric data in their passports, and are also designed to match such individuals against government watchlists.

At an inauguration ceremony for the eGates on April 23rd, Argentina’s Minister of the Interior, Rogelio Frigerio, said the devices “will not only speed up the transit time of travelers, but will also allow us to gather more accurate information of those entering and exiting Argentine territory using digital technology.”

In a statement announcing the deployment, Vision-Box suggested that it is the beginning of a larger project, saying that a planned expansion of the biometric processing program at Buenos Aires Ezeiza International Airport will let Argentinian citizens use their national ID cards instead of passports, and will allow foreign nationals to use their own ePassports for border processing, with new biometric eGates planned for departure gates as well. Beyond that, there is “a long-term plan to extend the solution to The Buenos Aires Port and to Aeroparque Jorge Newbery, an international airport located near downtown Buenos Aires,” Vision-Box added.
