Brazil’s Federal Police are deploying Regula 4308 dual-video spectral comparators across their forensic laboratory network to support investigations involving forged identity documents and counterfeit banknotes.
The first installations cover the National Institute of Criminalistics in Brasilia and the central laboratory in Rio de Janeiro. The work renews part of the existing Regula forensic infrastructure rather than introducing the technology for the first time, and is intended to keep examination workflows standardised across laboratories in different states as the force modernises its wider forensic capability.
The 4308 combines high-resolution imaging, optical magnification up to 320 times, more than 40 light sources and integrated top and bottom cameras in a single workstation. It supports inspection of embossed features, ink differentiation, RFID chip reading and automated document verification, which allows examiners to complete an analysis without moving between separate instruments. Its field of view covers an entire A4 document, so analysts do not have to split a page into fragments to examine it.
All the deployed devices run Regula Forensic Studio, the company’s examination software, which places a questioned document beside a trusted reference for comparison of security features, printing techniques and data. The rollout included training for Federal Police examiners focused on practical examination workflows.
“Based on our experience using Regula’s solutions for forensic document examinations, we have found them to be important tools that support our daily work,” said Acir de Oliveira Junior, a federal forensic expert at the National Institute of Criminalistics. He cited the extended field of view, imaging quality, illumination system and interface as contributors to workflow efficiency.
Arif Mamedov, chief executive of Regula Forensics, said forensic laboratories need examination capability combined with consistency across locations as document fraud grows more sophisticated. The two organisations have worked together for more than a decade, with some laboratories across Brazil relying on Regula examination equipment in daily casework over that period.
Regula has supplied document examination and border technology to other governments in the region, modernising border security nationwide in Ecuador, and its document libraries sit inside commercial verification platforms following joint platform development with Veriff.
