BIO-key Q2 Revenue Jumps 49 Percent as CyberDefense Initiative Targets European Market

BIO-key International has reported strong second quarter results for 2025, with revenue rising 49 percent year-over-year to $1.70 million, driven by growth across software, services, and hardware segments. The company also announced the launch of its CyberDefense Initiative, aimed at expanding its presence in the European defense market and building on existing relationships with international defense ministries.

Gross profit for the quarter increased 40 percent to $1.23 million, with gross margins at 73 percent compared to 77 percent in the same period last year, reflecting a higher proportion of hardware sales. Operating expenses fell 8.5 percent to $2.32 million through cost control measures. Software license fees totaled $806,087, up 4 percent, while services revenue reached $321,996, supported by custom work for a major customer. Hardware revenue climbed to $568,824, signaling increased adoption of the company’s biometric security solutions.

CyberDefense Initiative targets European defense market

The new CyberDefense Initiative focuses initially on Europe’s growing military and defense sector. BIO-key reported more than $600,000 in follow-on orders from a foreign defense ministry during the quarter, alongside work for a new international defense agency. Management noted that related defense ministry projects have generated over $3 million in revenue in recent years. The initiative will be staffed with executives experienced in military and intelligence sectors to strengthen engagement with defense contractors and government agencies.

BIO-key referenced projections that European Union member states are expected to spend more than €350 billion on defense in 2026. Broader EU plans could mobilize up to €800 billion in defense investments over four years, while NATO’s 2025 summit established a goal for member nations to allocate 5 percent of GDP to defense by 2035, including up to 1.5 percent of GDP for defense- and security-related areas such as cybersecurity.

Positioning for growth in biometric and passwordless IAM

CEO Mike DePasquale said, “We’re making steady progress advancing our direct and channel sales efforts, which have been refocused solely on BIO-key branded solutions principally in Europe, Middle East and Africa as well as domestic markets.” The company sees continued growth opportunities in biometric and passwordless identity and access management (IAM) solutions, especially as European governments increase defense spending and digital security investments.

With its focus on defense and cybersecurity markets, along with expansion into European and Middle Eastern territories, BIO-key is positioning itself to benefit from rising global interest in secure authentication technologies. The CyberDefense Initiative is intended to leverage both the company’s existing product suite and its track record with defense sector clients to capture new opportunities as governments commit to significant modernization and security programs.
