BIO-key Deploys Identity-Bound Biometric Authentication at Alabama’s AOD Federal Credit Union

BIO-key International, working with IT solutions provider BlueAlly, has deployed its PortalGuard identity and access management platform at AOD Federal Credit Union in Alabama, replacing the credit union’s reliance on phone-based multi-factor authentication with biometric sign-in. AOD serves more than 37,500 members across seven branches in northeast Alabama.

PortalGuard is BIO-key’s identity and access management platform, combining single sign-on with a range of authentication options, including the company’s identity-bound biometrics. The identity-bound approach ties authentication to the individual’s biometric rather than to a device or a phone number, which BIO-key argues ensures that only the authorized person can gain access and removes the shared-credential weakness of one-time codes sent to a phone. For the credit union, the deployment replaces multi-factor methods that depended on phone applications and SMS codes.

The shift is pitched as both a security and an operational improvement. Phone-based multi-factor authentication is vulnerable to phishing, SIM swaps, and the interception of one-time codes, and it breaks down when an employee does not have a phone to hand. Binding authentication to a biometric is designed to close those gaps while reducing the password-reset and code-entry friction that consumes help-desk time. The credit union frames the result as phishing-resistant access aligned with a zero-trust security posture.

“Bio-key PortalGuard delivered a level of flexibility beyond what we saw with Duo Security or UserLock,” said Aaron Woods, Chief Information Officer of AOD Federal Credit Union, who pointed to reduced password-management burden as a practical benefit. Michael DePasquale, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of BIO-key, described the deployment as addressing what he called the most critical vulnerability in the enterprise, the human element.

PortalGuard has been deployed across municipalities, universities, and other public-sector and enterprise environments. BIO-key has provided the platform to organizations including a Texas municipality and higher-education institutions, applying the same identity-bound biometric model to workforce access. The AOD deployment extends that pattern into the financial-services sector, where the regulatory and fraud pressures around account access are particularly acute.
