BigBear.ai has partnered with Hardy Dynamics to develop artificial intelligence solutions for U.S. Army drone operations, marking a strategic expansion of its defense sector portfolio and biometric technology initiatives. The collaboration supports Project Linchpin, a U.S. Army program aimed at advancing swarm autonomy and adaptive AI for drone fleets operating in contested environments.
The partnership will focus on developing AI-driven autonomy and data fusion capabilities that enable drones to operate collaboratively, maintain communications resilience, and deliver real-time situational awareness to military operators. While details of the software are limited, the companies emphasize their shared commitment to enhancing U.S. defense readiness through AI-powered orchestration tools.
This initiative builds on BigBear.ai’s growing defense footprint. The company has deployed AI and surveillance tools at U.S. borders and continues to supply autonomous systems and predictive analytics to federal security and intelligence agencies. Through Project Convergence – Capstone 5, BigBear.ai demonstrated its VANE platform’s ability to deliver forecasting, sentiment analysis, and dynamic decision support in complex military scenarios.
Biometrics, Port Deployments, and Market Growth
Beyond defense, BigBear.ai has expanded its presence in biometric identity systems. In June 2025, the company deployed its Enhanced Passenger Processing system at 12 major points of entry across the U.S. and Canada, including Charlotte, Chicago O’Hare, Dallas–Fort Worth, and the Vancouver Fraser Port. These systems aim to accelerate passenger verification while maintaining rigorous security standards.
Following news coverage of recent contracts and biometric deployments, BigBear.ai’s stock surged 13.7 percent during intraday trading on July 17, 2025. However, analysts note that the spike was driven more broadly by increased investor interest in defense-AI firms than by any single announcement. Market watchers credit BigBear.ai’s continued focus on defense, biometrics, and predictive analytics for sustaining its growth trajectory.
The company’s contract backlog has grown by 30 percent year-over-year, reaching $385 million as of Q1 2025. Financial analysts interpret this as a sign of increased demand for AI solutions within federal agencies and the national security sector.
Policy Environment Supports Sector Expansion
BigBear.ai’s momentum aligns with growing federal investment in biometric and AI-enabled infrastructure. The recently passed One Big Beautiful Bill Act—a broad tax-and-spending package—includes $6 billion for border technology upgrades, with $673 million earmarked specifically for biometric systems. Analysts view the legislation as a catalyst for further public-private collaborations in AI-driven security and identity solutions.
