BASF Explores Sale of Biometric Imaging Subsidiary trinamiX with 800+ Patents

Chemical giant BASF has announced that it is considering the sale or restructuring of its subsidiary trinamiX, which specializes in biometric imaging and mobile near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy solutions. The company stated it is reviewing strategic options for the subsidiary, with activities that are not part of BASF’s core business focus.

“These activities are not part of BASF’s core business, on which the company is focusing as part of the implementation of its new strategy,” BASF stated. “In the reassessment of trinamiX, the focus is on restructuring, cost efficiency and value optimization. The strategic measures may also include the sale of individual business areas.”

The potential divestiture is accompanied by significant leadership changes. Dr. Ingmar Bruder, the Managing Director who accompanied trinamiX’s development from the initial idea to the present day, left the management board on January 26. He will be succeeded on February 1 by Dr. Lothar Laupichler, who most recently headed BASF’s global electronic materials business.

TrinamiX is a substantial technology company, employing 200 people and holding more than 800 patents and patent applications. The company was founded in 2015 as a wholly owned subsidiary of BASF and specializes in biometric imaging technology and near-infrared spectroscopy solutions for consumer electronics and industrial applications.

The company’s biometric imaging technology has applications in mobile device authentication, while its NIR spectroscopy capabilities serve industrial material analysis markets. TrinamiX’s substantial patent portfolio makes it an attractive asset for potential acquirers in the biometrics or sensing technology sectors.

The announcement reflects BASF’s broader strategic shift to focus on core chemical manufacturing businesses rather than advanced technology subsidiaries. For biometric technology companies or sensing technology firms, trinamiX represents an opportunity to acquire significant intellectual property and technical capabilities. The timing and outcome of any potential sale remain to be determined.
