Bahrain has become the first Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) country to incorporate digital travel credential features into its national identity card, marking a significant advancement in secure cross-border identification technology. The upgrade, announced by the Information & eGovernment Authority (IGA), integrates Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) technology and meets International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standards.
The enhanced ID card includes a travel application-ready chip that enables it to function as a digital travel document in countries that accept electronic credentials. Mohammed Ali Al Qaed, Chief Executive of IGA, emphasized the pioneering nature of this initiative, stating, “If the country you’re traveling to accepts electronic travel documents, the new ID card will work seamlessly for that purpose. We’re proud to be the first country in the region to offer such a feature.”
The news follows Bahrain’s recent launch of eKey 2.0, an advanced digital authentication system featuring biometric capabilities, demonstrating the country’s ongoing commitment to digital transformation. The new ID card incorporates enhanced security features, including biometric data and increased storage capacity, while its design reflects Bahrain’s cultural heritage spanning 3,000 years.
Interior Minister General Shaikh Rashid bin Abdullah Al Khalifa has directed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Office of Nationality, Passports and Residence Affairs to coordinate with other nations for the acceptance of the ID card as a valid travel document.
According to a recent Goode Intelligence report, the travel sector is experiencing significant growth in digital identity adoption, with more countries exploring secure, technology-driven solutions for cross-border travel. The implementation of these advanced features positions Bahrain at the forefront of this global transformation in travel documentation.
Citizens and residents can obtain the new ID card upon the expiration of their current documents. The upgrade is part of Bahrain’s broader 2023-2026 digital transformation strategy, which includes the recent launch of six self-service platforms for government services and the establishment of a national laboratory for developing innovative public sector solutions.
