Austria Rolls Out Nationwide Digital Student ID Through eAusweise App

Austria has launched a nationwide digital student ID through the eAusweise app, giving students access to a smartphone-based credential linked to the country’s ID Austria digital identity system.

The digital student ID, delivered by youniqx Identity AG, a subsidiary of the Austrian State Printing House (Oesterreichische Staatsdruckerei), allows students to carry and present their identification digitally via the eAusweise mobile application. The credential is linked to each student’s verified ID Austria profile, providing a high level of identity assurance.

The eAusweise app already hosts other government credentials in Austria, and the addition of the student ID extends the platform’s utility to the education sector. Students can use the digital credential in scenarios where student identification is required, such as accessing campus facilities, claiming discounts, or verifying enrollment status.

youniqx Identity, which specializes in digital identity solutions for government and public sector use, handled the technical implementation of the credential within the eAusweise ecosystem. The company’s platform supports the issuance and lifecycle management of mobile identity documents conforming to European digital identity standards.

Austria’s digital student ID rollout aligns with broader European efforts to expand mobile credentials under the EU Digital Identity (EUDI) Wallet framework. Austria has been among the more active EU member states in deploying digital identity infrastructure, with ID Austria serving as the country’s foundational digital identity scheme for both public and private sector services.

Several EU member states are piloting or deploying digital ID wallets that consolidate multiple credentials into a single mobile application, following the EU’s revised eIDAS regulation.
